Hello and welcome to this week's KMWOOD News Sports Report. I'm Ray Hamill with humboldtsports.com we'll have more on that story in just a moment as we take a look at all of the big local sports stories of the week, including who else has been named MVP in HDNL baseball and softball, why it was an important week for the Humboldt Crabs, all the latest local American Legion baseball news and what's in store for North Coast Motorsports fans this weekend. [00:00:36] But first up, the HTNL announced the Conference MVPs and all league teams in baseball and softball this week and it was good news for a South Fork junior who is coming off a big spring leading the Cubs to a Little Four championship. Mackenzie Coleman is a conference MVP in softball for the second straight year. The South Fork team leader played a huge role on the path to success this spring as the Cubs edged the Hoopa warriors by just one win for this year's league title. Coleman shared this year's award with CO MVP Montea Colgrove of hoopa, each of whom enjoyed an outstanding season with their respective teams. Coleman led the Cubs in the pitchers circle with a 91 record and an ERA of 3.21 while also averaging.484 at the plate which was second best on the team behind all league teammate Haley Shepard. Mackenzie also had A team best 15 doubles as well as 27 RBIs. Her younger sister Layla Coleman also was included on this year's All League team along with shepherd and teammates Molly Perkins and Mackenzie Brewer. Colegrove was equally impressive for the Hoopa girls, finishing the season with a record of 15. 5 in the circle and a very impressive ERA of 0.88. She also had 157 strikeouts in 134 and 2/3 innings. Cole Grove's Hoopa teammates Ricky Lipscomb and Angela Hearn also were included on the ALL League along with Madison Gossie and Tinley Pigeon of Ferndale and St. Bernard's MacKenzie Laemmle. The MVP award was also shared in Little Four baseball with a pair of senior multi sport standouts receiving the honor. Ferndale's Tanner Pigeon was named co MVP along with St. Bernard's Tyler Heinrichs after each player played an integral role in their respective team's success this spring. St. Bernards went undefeated in this year's Little Four with Ferndale placing second. The MVP awards are the second of the year for Boat, Heinrich and Pigeon, who also earned the honor on the football field. Heinrich's younger brother Henry Heinrichs was also named to the Little four All League team along with his Saint Bernards teammates Michael Manzi, Luke Brunton and Braylon Johnson. Ferndale's Cash Mobley and Prescott Langer. South Fork's Travis Way and Mason Bell and Hoopa's Alan Kane rounded out the All League team. [00:02:57] In the Big Five, a pair of McKinleyville standouts were named MVPs in softball. Senior McKenna Sargeant took home the award after le leading the Panthers to a league title in what was an exciting and closely fought race for this year's championship. Sargeant was a force for her team both at the plate and in the pitcher circle. Just three wins separated the top four teams in the final conference standings, with Mckinleyville edging Fortuna for the pennant. The Panthers had five all league selections. In addition to Sargeant, McKinleyville's Cabela Carper, Liana Stumpf, Josie Dowd and Layli Guerrero were also included on the prestigious team along with Fortuna's Evelyn Haley Thompson and Olivia Hayes, Del Norte's Bella Aureola and Adi Whitford, Eureka's Bailey Brown and Arcata's Peyton Miller. In Big 5 baseball, McKinleyville sophomore Tate Sasso became one of the youngest MVPs in recent history after an outstanding season leading the Panthers to a conference and Charles Lakin Tournament championship double. Sasso edged Eureka Sr. Ty Crawford for the award, described by head coach Mike Dobrik as his team's Mr. Clutch. Sasso averaged 4616 at the plate and had 25 RBIs, nine doubles, two triples and five home runs while Crawford batted.382 with 26 RBIs, eight doubles, two triples and five Home Runs, and he struck out just five times all year. On the mound, Sasso finished 51 with an ERA of 2.31, 37 strikeouts and 11 walks, while Crawford was 72 with an ERA of 1.08 with 82 strikeouts and 17 walks. Joining Sasso on the All League team are his McKinleyville teammates Bodhi Reiniger, Joe Tano, Hunter Carper and Ridham Green. In addition to Crawford, Eureka's Garrett Levitt and Ryder Mitchell each also were included on the All League team along with Del Norte's Ben Shrewsbury and Landon Williams, Arcata's Tanner Keys and Fortuna's Tanner Franklin. [00:05:05] Switching gears it was a big week for the Humboldt Crabs. The local collegiate baseball club continued its fast start to the summer season with a three game sweep over the Rockland Stonecutters over the weekend to go to 12 0. They hit the road this week to open the Pacific Empire League against the Lincoln potters, taking game 132 on Tuesday night before suffering their first loss of the campaign by a score of 124 on Wednesday night. The Crabs will be back at the Arcata Ballpark this weekend to play three games against the AE Express beginning on Friday night in local American Legion baseball action. Meanwhile, the season for the local teams began to heat up this week. The Humboldt Eagles 18 news played the Southern Humboldt 76ers on Monday night and won 10 3. The Eagles are in for a busy weekend of tournament action in Petaluma with six games scheduled over four days. [00:06:01] Closer to home, the Northern Humboldt Giants 17 News are hosting their annual tournament this weekend. The three day eight team tournament runs from Friday through Sunday and will also feature three other local teams, the Southern Humboldt 76ers, the Wild Cactus and the Humboldt Eagles 17ewes and rounding out another busy week in local sports, North Coast Motorsports fans are getting ready for a busy weekend with back to back nights of racing action at the Redwood Acres Raceway. The second racing event of the season will feature the highly anticipated Jim Walker Fair Classic in the Late Models Division on Saturday night with two main events scheduled.
