Humboldt Supes Extend Cannabis Tax Payment Deadline

Mendocino County DA faces Scrutiny over spending

Against a backdrop of national chaos, Congressman Jared Huffman is holding a live town hall Sunday March 30th from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm at the Adorni Center in Eureka. If you cannot make it to eureka on Sunday, you can also listen to the town hall via Access Humboldt online or on TV.

Yesterday a Turkish woman, named Rumeyza Ozturk, was arrested off the street near Tufts University in Boston Massachusetts by 6 people, later identified as immigraiton officers, they were wearing all black cloths with face masks. They placed her into an unmarked vehicle and took her away.

David “Dave” Taylor, a longtime Whale Gulch resident in his early 80s, was reported missing to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office in early February after he was last seen at the Whitethorn Post Office on February 7 driving a 1990s Nissan Pathfinder. Tuesday, a person was found deceased in a single car accident near Briceland. HCMO Capt Quincy Cromer confirms these are the same person.

Thursday, March 27th, 2025, Humboldt County Drug Task Force Agents executed search warrants at two locations in Eureka  related to Gabriel Zachariah Giraud, age 49. Agents seized 1 ½ pounds of fentanyl during the searh however the suspect, Giraud, was not aprehended. 

Humboldt County cannabis farmers who have Measure S excise tax debts will have another nine months to pay them if they get signed up for a payment plan by the April deadline.

 

Vindicated of any wrongdoing, Mendocino County Auditor-Controller Treasurer-Tax Collector Chamise Cubbison is back at work after facing charges on use of public funds. Now, District Attorney David Eyster, who had filed the criminal charges against Cubbison, is under public scrutiny for his own use of public funds.

 

In state news, efforts to get insurance rates down to prevent a collapse in California’s real estate market and overall economy are moving forward in the legislature where two bills that seek to recover costs of climate-linked disasters, including the Los Angeles fires, from oil and gas companies have been introduced.

A drag queen, who goes by the name Dr. Lil Miss Hot Mess, was publicly targeted yesterday morning by Georgia Congresswoman Marjerie Taylor Green during the Wed March 26th, congressional hearing on PBS & NPR funding. KMUD'S Lauren Schmitt spoke with Lil Miss Hot Mess about the recent controversy, the joy of Drag, and what it means to keep showing up in the face of hatred.
