Rural Humboldt County property owners are exploring ways to lower their taxes with the help of a nearly 50-year-old California law. Proposition 8, passed in 1978, allows for temporary property tax reductions when real estate loses value due to market conditions, natural disasters, or other factors. Under this provision, homeowners can request a reassessment to lower their tax bill until the property value recovers.
