Last April, the American Forest Resource Council, an umbrella organization for Timber Industry stakeholders, sued the US Fish and Wildlife Service to lift protection of 3.5 million acres of forest land in California, Oregon and Washington. Were the protection lifted, it could lead to logging of mature and old-growth forests, and place the already threatened Northern Spotted Owl in even deeper peril. Because of this, a coalition of environmental organizations in the three states—including Humboldt-based EPIC—has intervened in the lawsuit.
